How to Install a Derailleur on a Mountain Bike
Installing a derailleur on a mountain bike can seem daunting, but with some basic tools and a little knowledge, you can do it yourself. A derailleur is a crucial component of your bike’s shifting system, allowing you to change gears smoothly and maintain optimal pedaling efficiency on varied terrain. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the installation process, ensuring your mountain bike's shifting performance is at its best.
Tools You Will Need
- Phillips screwdriver - 5mm Allen wrench - Cable cutters - Bicycle chain tool (if needed) - A new derailleur (if you're replacing an old one)
Step 1 Gather Your Materials
Before you start, ensure you have all the necessary tools and your new derailleur. Make sure the derailleur is compatible with your bike’s drivetrain, as different bikes may require specific types of derailleurs. Check the specifications for your mountain bike's crankset and cassette to be sure.
Step 2 Remove the Old Derailleur
If you are replacing an existing derailleur, you will need to remove it first. Use the 5mm Allen wrench to loosen the bolt that secures the derailleur to the derailleur hanger. Depending on your bike, there may also be a cable anchor bolt that needs to be loosened or removed. After that, remove the shift cable from the derailleur by loosening the cable anchor screw. Once everything is disconnected, carefully take the old derailleur off the bike.
Step 3 Install the New Derailleur
Attach the new derailleur to the derailleur hanger. Align it properly, making sure that the jockey wheels (the small wheels on the derailleur) sit in line with the cassette. Tighten the mounting bolt securely with the Allen wrench but be careful not to overtighten, as this could damage the hanger.
Step 4 Route the Shift Cable
Now that your new derailleur is in place, it’s time to install the shift cable. If you’re using a new cable, first thread it through the shifter on the handlebars. Then route the cable down the frame, through any cable guides, and attach it to the derailleur’s cable anchor where you previously disconnected it.
Step 5 Adjust the Cable Tension
With the cable routed and attached, pull it taut and tighten the cable anchor bolt on the derailleur. Ensure the derailleur moves smoothly when you shift gears. Before tightening fully, allow a little adjustment to make fine-tuning easier down the line.
Step 6 Adjust the Limit Screws
Your derailleur has limit screws that control how far it can move. There are two limit screws 'H' for the high gear limit and 'L' for the low gear limit. To adjust them
1. Shift to the highest gear (smallest cog). 2. Adjust the 'H' screw until the derailleur aligns perfectly with the cog. 3. Repeat the process for the lowest gear (largest cog) adjusting the 'L' screw.
These adjustments are crucial for preventing the chain from overshifting off the cassette.
Step 7 Indexing the Gears
Next, you will want to ensure that the gears shift smoothly across the cassette. This is known as indexing. Shift through the gears while turning the pedals and observe the movement. If the derailleur doesn’t shift perfectly into each gear, you might need to adjust the cable tension. If the chain hesitates to shift up or down, you can use the barrel adjuster on the shifter to fine-tune the cable tension. Clockwise will decrease tension, and counterclockwise will increase it.
Step 8 Test Ride
Finally, take your bike for a test ride. Shift through all the gears multiple times to ensure everything is functioning properly. Listen for any unusual sounds and pay attention to how smoothly the bike shifts. If any adjustments are needed, make them before heading out on longer rides.
Conclusion
Installing a derailleur on your mountain bike is a straightforward process that can save you money and deepen your understanding of your bike. By following these steps, you ensure that your bike is ready to tackle any trail with responsive shifting. Remember, regular maintenance and adjustments will keep your drivetrain in top condition, so don't hesitate to check your setup from time to time. Happy riding!
