How to Adjust Your Rear Derailleur on a Mountain Bike
Maintaining your mountain bike involves various tune-up tasks, and one of the most crucial components to pay attention to is the rear derailleur. The rear derailleur is responsible for shifting the chain across the gears on the rear cassette, ensuring smooth transitions between them. Over time, however, it may require adjustments due to wear, impact from rough terrain, or cable tension changes. This article will guide you through the steps to adjust your rear derailleur effectively.
Tools Needed
Before you start, gather the following tools - A Phillips screwdriver - A 5mm Allen wrench - A bike stand (optional, but helpful) - A chain checker (optional)
Step 1 Basic Inspection
Begin by inspecting the rear derailleur and the chain. Check for any visible damage, like bent hangers or worn-out chain links. Ensure the derailleur is properly mounted to the derailleur hanger. If the hanger is bent, you might need to use a derailleur hanger alignment tool or take it to a bike shop for realignment.
Step 2 Cable Tension Adjustment
To achieve smooth shifting, the cable tension must be set correctly. To check this, shift to the largest chainring in front and the smallest cog in the back. If the chain does not move easily onto the smallest cog (or it overshoots), you might need to adjust the cable tension.
Use the barrel adjuster located on the derailleur or on the shifter. To increase tension, turn the barrel adjuster counterclockwise; to decrease tension, turn it clockwise. Make adjustments in small increments and test the shifting after each adjustment.
Step 3 Limit Screw Adjustment
The rear derailleur has two limit screws, usually marked with H for high limit (smallest cog) and L for low limit (largest cog)
. Adjusting these screws prevents the chain from overshooting or falling off the cassette.1. High Limit Screw (H) Shift your bike into the smallest cog (highest gear). Adjust the H screw so that the derailleur aligns perfectly with the cog. If your chain is shifting but isn’t landing on the cog or is making noise, turn the screw slightly until the derailleur is properly aligned.
2. Low Limit Screw (L) Now, shift to the largest cog (lowest gear). Repeat the process with the L screw. Again, adjust until the derailleur is aligned with the largest cog without allowing the chain to overshift or fall off.
Step 4 Fine-Tuning the B-Screw
The B-screw adjusts the distance between the top pulley of the derailleur and the cassette. You want this distance to be optimal to prevent noise and improve shifting performance. With the bike in the largest cog, check the gap; it should be about 5-6mm. If it’s too far away or too close, adjust the B-screw by turning it clockwise to decrease the distance or counterclockwise to increase it.
Step 5 Test Shifting
After adjusting the tension, limit screws, and B-screw, it's time to test your work. Shift through all the gears while pedaling. If you notice hesitation or the chain skipping, recheck your adjustments. This process might require a bit of trial and error, so be patient.
Step 6 Final Inspection
Once you're satisfied with the shifting performance, take a moment for a final inspection. Ensure all screws and bolts are tight, and the derailleur is securely mounted. It's also a good time to check other components of your bike, such as brake adjustments and tire pressure.
Conclusion
Successful adjustment of your rear derailleur can significantly enhance your mountain biking experience, making your climbs smoother and your descents more controlled. Regular maintenance, including derailleur adjustments, is crucial for keeping your bike in top shape. With practice, you will gain confidence in making these adjustments, leading to a more enjoyable ride. Happy biking!
